With the immense competitiveness and Singapore’s obsession with dynamic growth, the existing Tanjong Pagar port will be shifted towards Tuas mega-port to accomodate the rising demands and capacity of the trading/ shipment industry. The current plot will be further re-developed into a new satellite town named the Great Southern Waterfront which aims to boost Singapore’s economy as well as to provide for housing demands.

The project calls for a theatre hall designed with the engagement of the water body in relation to the urban context.

The design approaches the objective of filtering strong winds such that the sounds of the waves crashing onto the dam could be heard. A series of digital studies was simulated to attain the optimum formal language to reduce the high intensity towards a normal intensity wind flow.

The formalistic approach was realised through a series of generative design strategies as well as a study of naval architecture. The openings on the facade allows for views towards the sea as well as a closer engagement towards the water body. This resulted in an integrated structure that fulfills the intent of framing views in various directions, and to extend the experience of floating into the concert hall and the other public spaces as well.
